Moving from a Gas Boiler to a Heat Pump: What to Expect in Your First Year

The UK is moving away from gas, and Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are leading the charge. If you’ve spent decades with a traditional boiler, the switch can feel like a big leap. As MCS-certified installers, we want to set the record straight on what life is really like with a heat pump.

1. A Different Kind of Warmth

A gas boiler works in “blasts”—it gets very hot, then turns off. A heat pump is more like a marathon runner. It provides a steady, consistent temperature. Your home won’t feel “stuffy,” but it will stay perfectly comfortable 24/7.

2. Efficiency is Everything

A brand-new A-rated boiler is about 90% efficient. An Air Source Heat Pump is often 300% to 400% efficient because it moves heat rather than creating it. Even in a cold Yorkshire winter, these systems extract heat from the air to keep your water hot and your radiators warm.

3. It Loves Underfloor Heating

If you’re renovating, heat pumps and underfloor heating are a match made in heaven. Because heat pumps operate at lower temperatures, the large surface area of a floor is the most efficient way to distribute that warmth.

4. Silence is Golden

Modern units, such as those from Daikin or Stiebel Eltron, are incredibly quiet. You’ll likely forget it’s even there.

Is your home ready?

Not every home is “heat pump ready” on day one—insulation is key. We provide a full suitability assessment to ensure a heat pump is the right financial move for you.
