Monobloc or split: what is the difference?

Monobloc heat pump

The main refrigeration circuit is contained within the outdoor unit. Water pipework connects the outdoor unit to the heating system inside the property.

Often considered for: straightforward domestic layouts and installations where suitable insulated water pipework can be routed safely.

Split heat pump

The refrigeration circuit is divided between outdoor and indoor equipment, with refrigerant pipework connecting the two components.

Often considered for: installations where the equipment layout or pipe route benefits from a split-system design.

Neither type is automatically best for every home. JMG will assess space, pipe routes, noise considerations, electrical supply and system temperatures before recommending a design.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme support

£7,500

Standard heat-pump grant

Eligible homeowners may receive £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water heat-pump installation.

Up to £9,000

Eligible off-grid oil or LPG homes

A higher grant may be available for qualifying off-gas-grid properties currently heated by oil or LPG.

Eligibility, property requirements, voucher approval and available grant amounts are subject to the current Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules. JMG applies for the voucher on the customer’s behalf as the installer.

How do I know what size heat pump I need?

A room-by-room heat-loss calculation is required. The result depends on the property fabric, design temperatures, emitters and hot-water requirements—not floor area alone.

Will all my radiators need replacing?

Not necessarily. Existing emitters are assessed against the proposed system temperatures, and only the upgrades required by the design should be included in the quotation.

Is a monobloc or split heat pump better?

Both can work well. The right choice depends on available space, pipe routes, design output, installation requirements and the selected manufacturer.

Does the grant make the installation free?

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme contributes towards an eligible installation, but the final customer contribution depends on the complete system design and quotation.

Do you service systems after installation?

Yes. JMG Renewables offers heat-pump servicing and maintenance options to support efficient, reliable operation.
